• BUilding Capacity for University Management (BUCUM) is the second TEMPUS project that Cardiff Metropolitan University has coordinated in the MENA region. It involves ten universities in Libya, Morocco, Egypt and Lebanon and aims to satisfy the regional priority of University Management and Student Services. The wider objective of the project is to demonstrate that good management practices can build sustainable Higher Education cooperation between nations. The project does this by addressing the challenges facing the management of a global university in the 21st Century.

BUCUM News and Activities

The project officially ended on 14th January 2016 -thank you to all those involved who worked so hard to make it a success! The short courses are still available and will continue to be run by the partner universities -thus ensuring the sustainability of the project beyond its funding period.

Once it is live on a public platform, details will also be made available for the MOOC -please keep checking back. This will allow university staff from around the world and anyone with a general interest to take the course at a time and place convenient for them.

4th September 2015 Professor Daniel Hernandez Ruipérez, Rector of University of Salamanca (USal), received the Egyptian ambassador to Spain, His Excellency Mahmoud Ismail Ahmed SHafik Abdelmoeti. The visit was to review the cooperation between USal and Egyptian Universities, with BUCUM being highlighted as an imporant collaboration. Further details of the visit can be viewed here 


University Hassan II of Casablanca have been busy over the last four months delivering the short courses. Photos of the events can be viewed here


8th September -The  Governance Centre at Suez Canal University was officially opened. Those in attendance included Prof. Nahed Moustafa; Vice Rector of SCU, Prof. Mohammed Saleh; Director of Faculty Members and Leaders Development Centre, Dr. Mai Hassan; Lecturer of Clinical Pathology, FOMSC and MOOC project member , Mr. Hassan Ateya; Technician in MOOC project and  Prof. Amani Waheed; Prof. of Occupational Medicine, FOMSCU and project manager. Also in attendance was Eng. Kareem Hamdy of the National Erasmus Office.

26th/27th August -Dr Maha Emad and Professor Amani Waheed of Suez Canal University delivered the short course on Soft Skills to delegates from partner universities in Morocco and Egypt at their campus in Ismailia. The course focused on aspects such as team work and communication skills, and encouraged participants to create their own Personal Development Plan. Photos from the event can be viewed here

3rd August 2015 -The Governance Centre at AAST was formally opening by Professor Ismail Abdel Ghafar, President of AAST. Also in attendance at the ceremony was Professor Mohamed Loutfi, Pro Vice Chancellor (International) at Cardiff Metropolitan University and BUCUM Project Coordinator, Professor Sultan Abu Orabi, Secretary General of Association of Arab Universities as well as other distinguished guests. 


20th June 2015 -The promotional video for the MOOC has been released ahead of the commencement of the course in September and can be viewed here. Thanks to the team at University of Salamanca and the partners involved in its production.
